Power Plus - Your South Dakota General Electrical Contracting Pros

Jay Slough - Thursday, October 29, 2009

Power Plus - Experts in installing and maintaining renewable energy systems in South Dakota, South Western North Dakota, and Western Wyoming.

Lets Face the Facts head on…….

Maintaining your home or commercial facilities is the most important thing you can do to keep it safe and beautiful, as well as increase its value.

The wiring system in many older homes has not kept pace with today's demand for modern appliances and electrical usage. Dimming lights when an appliance goes on, a shrinking TV picture, slow-heating appliances, or fuses blowing frequently are signals of overloaded circuits. Ugh!

As members of the BBB, IEC, NECA, and BHHB, Power Plus has some of the highest skilled and talented professionals in the industry. They provide quality products and superior customer service. This includes more than just installation, it encompasses the managing and planning of electrical work as well upgrades, repairs and maintenance.

Including:
Eliminating safety hazards, replacing two pronged outlets with grounded outlets, troubleshooting circuit breakers that trip often, flooring/wall outlets, surging and lightning protection and much, much more. To see more go here http://powerplussolar.com/contracting.html

Here are some Safety Tips that I found helpful:

-Place cords above rugs and furniture, and do not run cords behind baseboards or curtains and in high-traffic areas.

-Discontinue use of damaged, abused or worn extension cords and replace as soon possible.

-Use appliance cords with three-prong plugs only in a three-slot outlet.

-Never remove the grounding pin or force it to fit into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.

-Replace or have appliance repaired if the cord is frayed or damaged.

-Replace any appliance or tool if it causes even small electrical shocks, overheats, shorts out or gives off smoke or sparks.

-Use light bulbs with the proper wattage that is not too high for the fixture.

-Allow air space around heat-producing appliances such as TVs, plug-in radios, stereo sets, computers and powerful lamps to prevent overheating.

-The wiring system in many older homes has not kept pace with today's demand for modern appliances and electrical usage. *Dimming lights when an appliance goes on, a shrinking TV picture, slow-heating appliances, or fuses blowing frequently are signals of overloaded circuits.

-Avoid using extension cords on a permanent basis and never plug more than two home appliances into an outlet at once to avoid circuit overloading.

-Use only outlets designed to handle multiple plugs.

-Do not exceed 1,500 watts for each outlet or circuit. If a circuit breaker trips or a fuse blows frequently, immediately cut down on the number of appliances on that line.

-Check periodically for loose wall receptacles, loose wires, or loose lighting fixtures.

-Listen for popping or sizzling sounds behind walls. Immediately shut off, then have a professional replace light switches that are hot to the touch, and lights that spark and flicker.

-A functioning smoke alarm dramatically increases your chances of surviving a fire.

*Do not fix electrical problems by yourself, it is dangerous and could be deadly!

Solar Pumps Of the Future

Jay Slough - Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Lets get Pumped!

Recently a friend of mine investigated solar power water pumps. He wanted to add a fountain in his yard that is self-sustaining using energy from the sun rather than  electricity. That way the fountain will be both decorative and provide aeration, without having to be on all the time. When the sun is out, the fountain turns on. At night or rainy days, the fountain is off.

Intrigued by my environmentally friendly friend, I also found out that solar pumps can perform a variety of operations. Yes, they are used commonly in garden ponds and fountains. However, they are also very useful for pumping well water in remote locations such as irrigation systems. In fact, solar pumps are becoming one of the most favored means for pumping water. The major benefit of solar powered pumps is that they have zero running costs. Say it with me.. F.R.E.E.

Are you pumped yet?

Power Plus provides motor and Pump installation while maintaining (I’m going to say it…) the best renewable energy products, pricing, and service!

Fun Facts:
Did you know that solar energy can be used for heat and electricity?

Lets start with….

Heat: When converted to thermal (or heat) energy, solar energy can be used to heat water. I know that you’ve all seen how it can heat up a swimming pool but it can also be used to heat water in homes and buildings.

Energy: Solar energy can be converted into what is called photovoltaic (PV devices) or “solar cells” which changes sunlight directly into electricity. Pretty cool huh?

So not only can we provide you with motors and pumps, we also have electrical products to power various appliances throughout your home or business.

So, if pumping “your motor” full of renewable energy products is getting you excited then you are in the Power Plus mode.

The Solar Decision

Jay Slough - Thursday, October 22, 2009

A look into the future and many businesses and residencies are excited about the opportunity to install energy solutions that will make a significant change in their consumption and expenses.  Globally, world organizations, NGOs, and private enterprises are finding solutions to their energy needs.  These organizations are setting the pace for society.

In the past five years, a large number of start-up energy solution companies discovered the need for renewable energy solutions.  This drove the price of solar and wind down as products flew out the doors for global projects.  However, solutions five years ago are much better today.

Solar efficiencies are improving at a steady pace and buyers need to evaluate if a solar solution today will stand up to what they will see two to five years from now.  It is important to note that solar power continues to improve and more importantly, power storage and distribution continues to improve.  This combination will allow companies and residencies to use the power for their own consumption and sell their excess power back to the grid.

Great idea, right?  Well, it all depends on your local power company, your location and weather patterns, as well as the system you choose. Sound complicated? Well it can be, but reputable companies in the renewable energy business understand the questions you have and can build a system to suit your needs.

The system.  Wouldn’t it be great to have a modular system that could be upgraded with higher efficiency panels every three or four years to maximize the energy of the sun?  Sure, but today you need to weigh the investment in a system with tax incentives, rebates, cost, warranties, and panel capabilities.

My advice, don’t go down this path alone.  You need to trust the experts and ensure companies online have a team ready to support your needs and questions from start to finish.  The best way is to ask for references to include manufacturers, partners, and consumers. Taking an hour to talk to five individuals will save you thousands in the long run and more importantly less stress throughout the process.

Don’t be scared of a renewable energy solution, trust the experts and educate yourself regarding the options in the market place.
